Issue: 117 Subscribers: 12,356+ 👋🏻Dear Fellow Misfit PharmDs, If you’re reading this, you’re very likely at a crossroads in your pharmacy career. Deep down, you know the answer is no. You’re yearning for something more—a career that lights you up inside, challenges you in all the right ways, and meshes with your lifestyle and family responsibilities. A career that’s anything but traditional. For example, one PharmD emailed me his exact conundrum this week: Feel similar to him? The Crucial StepBut here’s the thing: before you can make the leap to your dream Misfit PharmD job, you need to take a step back and get crystal clear on who you are, what makes you tick, and what unique aptitudes you bring to the table. Because too often, we pick a career path and stick with it out of habit or perceived obligation without stopping to consider if it’s really the best fit for our interests, skills and strengths. 🔨Building a House Analogy 🏡Consider the process of building your dream house. You wouldn’t just start laying bricks willy-nilly, right? Before you ever break ground, you’d work with an architect to create a blueprint that captures your specific needs and wants—how many bedrooms, what kind of layout, what architectural style. Designing your dream Misfit PharmD career follows the same principle. Before you make any moves, you need to create a “blueprint” of what you really want and what you’re naturally inclined towards. My Eerie Career Aptitude ExperienceI learned this firsthand when I hit a wall in my own pharmacy career. I knew I wanted to make a change, but I had no idea what I was really good at outside of what I did day-to-day in a retail pharmacy. So, I started and stopped many side hustles. Only one of which took off over a 4+ year experimentation period: building my own PGx training course. I had to figure it out the long, hard, awkward way. You guys, this assessment was eerily accurate about my talents and the dream career I cobbled together for myself with much trial & error. Through a series of exercises, it measured my natural abilities in things like:
—stuff I never would have thought to connect to my career! Plus it paired those results with my own interests I got to input myself. When I got my results back, it was like a lightbulb went off. 💡 My top career matches? Business school professor, genetic counselor, and broadcast media journalist. That’s exactly what ended up building for myself in creating a digital course on the business of genetic testing!! Suddenly, my interests and experiences snapped into place. I could combine my love for teaching, knack for distilling complex information, and drive to help people—all strengths the assessment pinpointed—into building my own business. Dang, I wish I knew this information before I got started. It would have made the way much clearer for me to build a career I was interested in and had the unique skills to rock it. I’m not saying the YouScience assessment will give you the exact roadmap to your dream career. But it will give you a strong starting place. Powerful insight into your innate aptitudes and the types of work that let you shine brightest. And that, my friends, is the foundation for making a meaningful career change. Now Your First StepHere’s my challenge to you: Instead of jumping straight from a pharmacy job you hate to the first non-traditional role that catches your eye, I want you to press pause and spend some time reflecting on what really makes you tick. Chances are you don’t come up with a lot of ideas doing that kind of vague work, huh? Then, I want you to head over to YouScience.com and take their aptitude assessment. It takes about 90 minutes. This thing is in-depth. (And actually really fun to take. It puts your brain to work and isn't like any other assessment you've ever taken). I promise it’s well worth the investment. The results will give you insights into your natural talents, and get you thinking about career paths you may have never considered. And here’s the best part: I’ve got a special promo code just for my Misfit PharmDs. Enter JAMIE15 at checkout for 15% off the assessment (your total will be <$50. I mean come on. No brainer, right!?). Consider it a gift from me to you—because I believe so strongly in the power of self-discovery as the first step to a joyful career. *Plus, now is a great time to do this for yourself. You’re going to have extra downtime during the holiday. You're probably a nerd like me and love knowing more about how you operate. Annnnnd you likely have some extended family you may need to avoid on this holiday week, so consider this your escape plan! ;) I got you. Reviewing Your ResultsI have a lot to say about reviewing your results. So I’ll go into how to interpret these results through the lens of PharmD in-depth in next week’s newsletter. This will give you time to take the assessment yourself and do this along with me. Once you’ve got your YouScience results in hand, the real fun begins. I’ll show you how to look for the common threads between your assessment, your past experiences, and that little voice inside of you telling you what you really want. You’ll use those insights as your North Star as you explore different non-traditional career paths. Maybe you’ll discover a love for people management. Maybe you’ll lean into your creativity and start a side hustle as a consultant. Or maybe, like me, you’ll realize your passion for teaching and build a business around helping other pharmacists find their professional purpose. Regardless, you'll be more empowered knowing more about yourself. The possibilities are endless—but they all start with knowing yourself. Because let me tell you, Misfit PharmDs—from one trailblazer to another, it’s so worth it. With grit and gratitude, PS: Don’t forget to use code JAMIE15 for 15% off the YouScience assessment! I can’t wait to hear how your results open up new paths for you. Feel free to hit reply and let me know what you discover about yourself—I’m always here to cheer you on. If you enjoyed this email there are a few ways I can help you:
